Week 7

(July 16, 2007 - July 20, 2007)

This week I did a lot of stuff! I worked on my final report some more and have almost two whole sections of it completed. I have written about the how the class runs on a day-to-day basis and what lessons and materials we have covered. Though I am not done writing about the lessons we covered because we have not yet finished teaching all the lessons.

The rest of the week I worked on a book that Sarita and I are putting together about how to teach HCI to high school students. My focus has been on putting in our lesson plans and revising them a bit. First I copied and pasted in our lesson plans, then I went through and began the editing process. I did things like take our names out of the plans and rewriting to make the plan clearer. This took a lot of work and time to do and I am still not yet satisfied with it. I plan on doing further editing this week after I put it down and rest from the task for a while.

This week we also had two classes with our students. On Monday they were in the computer lab working on editing their designs. They were asked to look at comments that they received from their classmates and adjust their designs accordingly. They had a very good time working in the lab and I found out that it was most students' favorite part of the class. On Wednesday the students wrote out sample advertisements for their digital desktops. Then they practiced reading aloud the ads in pairs and then in front of the whole class. The ads were very interesting to listen to because they all had a different style to them. Some students emphasized the various functions and features in their designs, whereas other students just said that theirs was the best in the world and that's why you should buy it. Though I have to admit that most of them sounded like TV advertisements and then I should pick up my phone and call to order one afterwards. Some students even offered freebie incentives for "ordering now."

Outside of work I did several cool things this week because my family came into town for a short vacation. I went to a class at Lexington Chocolatier with my Mom and learned how to make a truffle and temper chocolate. We were allowed to take home whatever we made at the end and it was just delicious, but we definitely had more chocolate than we knew what to do with. I also went to the World of Coca-Cola with my family. We had a really good time going to the exhibits and trying different coke products from around the world.
