CRA 2001 Academic Careers and
Effective Teaching Workshop
February 4 - 6, 2001

Key Bridge Marriott
Arlington, Virginia
(Washington, D.C. area)

This was the latest of a highly successful series of workshops that CRA holds for new faculty and advanced graduate students in computer science, computer engineering, computational science, and other computing-related disciplines. The workshop focused on practical methods for having a successful and fulfilling academic career. Over 75 faculty and graduate students attended.

The next workshop is scheduled for February 10 - 12, 2002.

Several changes were made to make this year's workshop even more valuable than those held previously:

  • Two workshops, Effective Teaching and Academic Careers, were merged into a single workshop so that participants would be able to attend all sessions.

  • This year's workshop included talks by senior members of the two largest funding agencies for computing research, NSF and DARPA, providing overviews of the agencies' operations and funding programs.  There was also a workshop led by NSF staff on how to write a good funding proposal.

  • The workshop was collocated with the CRA Board of Directors' meeting and the CRA Computing Leadership Summit, the latter bringing together the presidents, executive directors, and other senior volunteers from AAAI, ACM, CRA, CSTB, IEEE Computer Society, SIAM, and USENIX.  A joint reception was held with CRA board members and Summit attendees that provided workshop participants an opportunity to meet informally with senior leaders from the computing community.

  • The fee for students, professors, and researchers of CRA academic and industrial member-organizations was reduced to $175.  The fee for non-members was $225.  This included breaks, receptions on February 4th and 5th, breakfast on the 5th and 6th, and lunch on the 5th.
