CIFellows

In 2009, the Computing Community Consortium established, with support from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) [link], the Computing Innovation Fellows (CIFellows) Project. The program sought to provide recent Ph.D. graduates in computer science, computer engineering, information science, or closely related fields an exciting opportunity to obtain one- to two-year positions at universities, industrial research laboratories, and other organizations that are pursuing innovation in computing and its positive impact on society.

The goal of the CIFellows Project was to retain new Ph.D. scholars in research and teaching during challenging economic times, while also supporting intellectual renewal and diversity in the computing fields at U.S. organizations. In light of the continued economic downturn, the CCC funded with continued support from NSF, additional cadres of CIFellows in fall 2010 and fall 2011.

A total of 127 Ph.D.s have been supported through the program since 2009. These CIFellows have generally received outstanding research and teaching enrichment experiences, and the majority of the 2009 CIFellows (who have now completed the maximum two years in the program) have landed permanent positions in academia (including tenure-track faculty appointments) and industry as a result of their experiences.
