Recruitment and Retention of Underrepresented Minorities Report Issued
A committee convened by the Coalition to Diversify Computing (CDC) has recently released a report entitled "Recruitment and Retention of Underrepresented Minority Graduate Students in Computer Science." The report offers 25 practical suggestions for graduate departments to consider. These suggestions cover specific recruitment tactics, means to facilitate early success in graduate school, retention methods, and organizational issues such as best ways of providing financial support.

Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing 2000 Conference
The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women Conference (September 14-16, 2000) is a technical conference that consists of plenary speakers, technical papers, panels and workshops by successful researchers in the area of computing. The theme of the Third Grace Hopper Celebration is Interconnection, as it applies to the connections between computing and other fields, the connections among women in computing around the world, and the connection between technology and the needs of the world of women. The conference will be held in Hyannis, Massachusetts.

Call for ACM Award Nominations
The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) has issued a call for nominations for more than a dozen awards, ranging from the Doctoral Dissertation Award to the A.M. Turing Award. The deadline for nominations for the ACM Fellows Program and the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award is August 31, 2000. The deadline for nominations for all other ACM awards is October 31, 2000.

DoD Announcements in Critical Infrastructure Protection and Software Research
The Department of Defense (DoD) issued two Announcements in the areas of Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) and High Confidence, Adaptable Software Research (SW). The first Announcement is for Research and the second is a Fellows program to grow new research talent. White papers for the CIP and SW Research Program of the University Research Initiative are due August 17, 2000. Proposals for the CIP and Information Assurance Science and Engineering Augmentation Awards for Fellows are due October 3, 2000.
