CSTB RELEASES "DIGITAL DILLEMMA" REPORT ON THE WEB
The Committee on Intellectual Property Rights and the Emerging Information Infrastructure has posted a prepublication copy of "The Digital Dilemma: Intellectual Property in the Information Age" on the website of the National Academies. The report discusses the impact that electronic information has on issues such as business models, copyright and publication. It makes recommendations about these issues but it also urges legislators to delay overhauling intellectual property laws and policy until markets and research provide a clearer picture of what adjustments are needed.
The report is available on the CSTB website at http://www4.nationalacademies.org/cpsma/cstbweb.nsf.
IBM INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED COMMERCE PROPOSALS DUE MARCH 1, 2000
"In order to encourage research in this nascent but rapidly growing important field, IAC will award a one-year fellowship for the 2000-2001 academic year to the student who submits the best doctoral thesis proposal in the area of electronic commerce. The award includes tuition, stipend, and a summer position at IBM Research. We will consider proposals that are being submitted to thesis committees as well as proposals or summaries of thesis research that is underway."
Complete details about the IAC fellowship can be found on IBM's website at http://www.ibm.com/iac/news-contest.html.
NSF DATA BRIEF ON GRADUATE ENROLLMENT IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
The National Science Foundation released its figures for graduate enrollment in Science and Engineering in 1998. The number of science and engineering graduate students has declined for the fifth consecutive year since a peak enrollment in 1993. The decrease occurred in all major science fields except computer science (where enrollment was up 5.1 percent) and agricultural science (which experienced no change).
