NRC OPEN SESSION FOR WORKFORCE NEEDS IN IT, JANUARY 10-11, BELLEVUE, WA.
"Workforce issues related to information technology are a concern to both government and industry as well as to IT workers themselves. To help address this concern, Congress has asked the Research Council to conduct a study on workforce needs in this field over the next decade. A Research Council subcommittee will host an open session to hear worker perspectives of IT workforce needs in the Seattle, Washington region, January 10 and 11. Individuals who wish to testify may pre-register by sending a request to itwinput@nas.edu or will be called on a first-come, first-served bases. This meeting is open to the public.

FREDERICK P. BROOKS, JR. WINS ACM'S A.M. TURING AWARD
"The Association for Computing Machinery announced the selection of Frederick P. Brooks, Jr., as the winner of the 1999 A.M. Turing Award, considered the Nobel Prize of Computing. Dr. Brooks was chosen for his landmark contributions to computer architecture, operating systems, and software engineering."
