ADVOCACY ALERT: PROPOSED BUDGET CUTS IN DARPA'S COMPUTING RESEARCH PROGRAMS
The House has passed and the Senate is about to pass FY 2001 Defense Appropriations bills that contain deep cuts in funding for the Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency computing research programs. The House bill would cut $61 million and the Senate bill would cut nearly $50 million from the $446 million budget requests for these programs. CRA is working to restore this funding before the bills are reconciled by the House-Senate conference committee.

ADVOCACY ALERT: FY 2001 APPROPRIATIONS FOR THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION
The FY 2001 funding bill approved by the House Appropriations Committee includes a 3.4 percent budget increase for the NSF, just a fraction of the requested increase of 17 percent. While the amount provided for the Computer and Information Science and Engineering directorate is about 13 percent above current-year funding, it's about $90 million below what CISE has requested. The bill would also eliminate funding for the Terascale Computing Systems program. The action now moves to Senate Appropriations, which will be writing its version of the funding bill in the next two weeks. The Senate committee is generally favorable toward the NSF and the Information Technology Research initiative. However, the funds available for distribution are severely constrained. The committee needs to be assured it has broader support for the NSF budget request from within the Senate.

NSF RELEASES "SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING INDICATORS - 2000"
"In addition to an historical chapter, the report presents trends in U.S. and international research and development (R&D) funds and alliances, in the S&E workforce, in science and mathematics education from the elementary level through graduate school and beyond, and in public attitudes and understanding of science and engineering. Science and Engineering Indicators – 2000 also devotes a chapter to the significance of information technologies for science and the daily lives of our citizens in schools, the workplace, home, and community."
