IEEE CS Undergraduate Teaching Award Nominations Should be Submitted by July 15, 2001

The purpose of this award is to recognize individuals and groups who have made pedagogical contributions to the computer science, computer engineering, and information science and technology disciplines that have had a significant impact on undergraduate teaching. The award consists of a plaque, certificate and a stipend of $2,000. A nomination form is available on the Computer Society's website at <http://hopper.computer.org/awards.nsf/cse>. This form is most suitable for nominating indviduals. U.S. Doctoral Degree Statistics for 1999

The National Science Foundation has released the final tables on Science and Engineering Doctoral Awards for 1999. The tables show that the number of doctorates produced in computer science continues to be low and that underrepresentation of women and minorities persists. 850 computer science doctorates were awarded in 1999. This was lower than all major scientific disciplines except earth/atmospheric/ocean sciences at 807 doctorates. Women were awarded 119 PhD degrees in computer science in 1999--90 of them US citizens. These numbers compare with a high point of 160 women doctorates in 1995 (the high point of the 1990s) and 90 doctorates in 1990 (the low point of the decade). 483 of the computer science doctorates went to US citizens and permanent residents--which was the lowest number since 1991.

The final report, Science and Engineering Doctorate Awards: 1999, has not yet been published; but the tables are in final form. Ten tables of statistics can be found online at <http://www.nsf.gov/sbe/srs/srs01405/start.htm#tabs>. Further information on survey methodology can be found at <http://www.nsf.gov/sbe/srs/ssed/sedmeth.htm>.

AT&T Adds to Support of MentorNet Outreach Program

AT&T awarded MentorNet a two year, $300,000 grant specifically targeted to establishing mentor relationships with women at historically black colleges and Hispanic-serving institutions. MentorNet seeks to: connect women students studying engineering and the related sciences with industry mentors; provide a framework and training for them to pursue a year-long mentoring relationship through e-mail; and matches community college, undergraduate and graduate students with male and female mentors. For more information, visit MentorNet's website at <http://www.mentornet.net/>
