Academic R&D Expenditures in Fiscal Year 2004
According to a new NSF report:
Total R&D expenditures for computer sciences (CS) at universities and colleges were $1.404 billion in FY2004. Ranked by total expenditures, the top ten institutions accounted for 46% of CS R&D. The top ten institutions accounted for 51% of federally financed R&D expenditures in CS. R&D in CS represented 3.3% of total S&E R&D expenditures at colleges and universities. CS accounted for 3.8% of federally financed R&D expenditures at universities and colleges. S&E fields at universities and colleges received 64% of their R&D funding from the Federal government. CS, however, received 73% of its R&D funding from the Federal government (compared to 67% in 2001). The two largest providers of federally financed R&D expenditures in CS at universities and colleges were the NSF (40%) and the Department of Defense (29%).
